Togo’s – modernizing payment solutions using Squirrel & Eigen

BURNABY, BC, 6 January 2016 — Squirrel Systems, a leading technology provider to the hospitality industry, announced that key customer Togo’s Eateries, Inc. has implemented an EMV payment solution in their San Pedro, California location. Via the Squirrel Professional point of sale system integrated with the Eigen payment engine, Togo’s successfully processed EMV transactions in their corporate head office store.

EMV generally refers to the technology used to authenticate chip card transactions. Earlier this year, a liability shift occurred in which merchants became responsible in certain cases for fraudulent payment transactions not processed using chip-enabled devices and applications. In an effort to minimize risk, Togo’s, a sandwich chain with approximately 250 locations open and under development in the US, turned to Squirrel Systems and Eigen Services for their EMV solution.

Mike Pennington, Technology Integration Manager at Togo’s, said, “We chose Squirrel when we were looking for a new POS vendor because we were looking for a company that was big enough and had a long enough history to help us grow and move forward, but would also provide the personal touch to meet the needs of our restaurants. We also knew we could work with Squirrel to integrate the robust architecture of our POS system to a number of the other technologies we wanted to bring to Togo’s.”

One such technology was EMV. The Eigen payment engine is semi-integrated with Squirrel Professional. Check amounts are sent directly from the point of sale application to the payment device, into which the guest’s chip card is inserted for authentication. Joseph Tabenkin, Product Manager at Eigen Services, said, “The integration between the Eigen payment engine and the Squirrel POS system has been developed to be seamless. With the choice of either a tethered payment device for counter service operations or pay at the table hardware, this solution provides flexibility to customers. The EMV implementation at Togo’s is a milestone.”

After a busy holiday period at the Togo’s San Pedro location, staff reported that the transition to EMV went very well, with transaction times remaining the same quick speed as prior to the deployment and ultimately contributing to a satisfactory guest experience.

According to Mike Devine, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Squirrel Systems: “Having recently received the Most Innovative Supplier Award from Togo’s, Squirrel is pleased to add another success story with this valued customer through the implementation of EMV.”

ABOUT TOGO’S EATERIES INC.

Togo’s was founded in 1971 by a young college student in San Jose, California with a big appetite and a little money. He started making sandwiches the way he liked them – big, made to order and stuffed with the freshest ingredients. Soon there were lines out the door and Togo’s was well on it’s way to becoming a west coast original. Now, almost 40 years later, Togo’s still makes sandwiches the way we did back then. In addition to great sandwiches, Togo’s makes hand-tossed salads, wraps, soups and desserts. For more information on Togo’s Eateries Inc., visit www.togos.com.
